Judges, attorneys and other child welfare professionals often struggle with child safety decision-making.  How do you know whether a child’s injury represents a pattern of dangerous family conditions or is a one-time incident?  What criteria do you use to determine whether a child is safe?  How do you decide whether to return a child home?  What information do you need from others, including OCS and CASA to make these decisions? Lack of a good decision making structure can lead to frustration for families and cause children to linger in foster care unnecessarily.  This training will provide a practical summary about child safety, address the fundamentals of safety assessments and safety planning and discuss appropriate decision-making skills that relate directly to permanency and child well-being.

Topics covered will include:  A review of Child Safety: A Guide for Judges and Attorneys; Determining Whether to Reunify-What Judges Need from You; Substance Abuse: Reunification and Permanency; and SDM® Risk Assessment Documents.  This is an extremely important topic that anyone involved with child welfare issues and foster care should attend.

6.0 credits of continuing education (CLE/CEUs) are pending approval for the session. A participant fee of $20 is collected upon registration to cover the expenses of lunch, refreshments, and materials including: pens, paper, portfolio, and handouts.

CLE hours attended during this training have been approved for CINC child attorney qualification.
