A Practitioner's Resource Guide: Helping Families to Support Their LGBT Children

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) developed this resource guide for practitioners in health and social service systems with the aim of helping them implement best practices in engaging and helping families support their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) children.  This guide includes a brief overview on the early ages of self-awareness, coming out as LGBT, and some important definitions; discusses the critical role of families in reducing risk and promoting well-being; presents information and guidance on how to help families decrease risk and increase well-being for their LGBT children; and provides suggestions for increasing family engagement and support.
