SB39, now Act 92, was signed by the Governor on May 21, 2024. The Act establishes an “Advice of Rights for Children” provision in the Louisiana Children’s Code. This new article will become effective on August 1st and requires judges to advise children who are ten years of age and older that they are a party to the proceedings and of their rights, such as the right to have notice of and attend all hearings. In addition, Act 92 makes other relevant changes to the Children’s Code, for example, clarifying the process for asking the court to disapprove a child’s placement. Our speakers will explain changes to Child in Need of Care law and will also provide information about other new laws that impact our children and families, such as delinquency, education, and mental health laws.
