How to Protect Vulnerable Children from Credit Reporting Problems

Youth in foster care are particularly susceptible to identity theft because they often lack a permanent address and their personal information is frequently shared among numerous adults and agency databases.  This resource from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) provides child welfare caseworkers and agencies with guidance on how they can help young people in foster care start their adult lives with healthy credit.  It includes sample letters that child welfare case workers may use when disputing errors found in credit reports of children in their care, as well tip sheets for parents and foster care caseworkers to help young people start and maintain good credit.  (May 2014)
