FRIENDS has released its first podcast: Historical Trauma Among African Americans, ACES, and Resilience

The traumatic history of African Americans, how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) compound multi-generational trauma, and what hope looks like are considered in this podcast.

Three experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Child Traumatic Stress Center, NC State University, and a local Head Start Program provide evidenced-based information on ACES, historical trauma and bias, and how hope and resilience play a role in mitigating these hardships in African American families. Provides tips for current caregivers and others to help address the needs of immigrant and refugee children who have experienced traumatic separation. The relationship with a parent is critical to a child’s sense of self, safety, and trust. Separations from parents and siblings— especially under sudden, chaotic, or unpredictable circumstances such as those related to war, refugee, immigration, or detention experiences—may lead children to develop depression, anxiety, or separation-related traumatic stress symptoms. This tip sheet outlines what children of different ages might be experiencing and how caregivers and others can help.

Child Welfare Trauma Training Toolkit

Resource Description

Teaches basic trauma-informed knowledge, skills, and values about working with children who are in the child welfare system who have experienced trauma. The Child Welfare Trauma Training Toolkit also prides information on how to support children's safety, permanency, and well-being through case analysis and corresponding interventions tailored for them, their biological, and resource families.

This Adolescent Trauma and Substance Abuse (ATSA) online course was developed to provide training and materials for mental health clinicians, substance abuse treatment providers, parents, caregivers, and youth on the complex intersections between psychological trauma and co-occurring substance abuse and dependency. The course includes an interactive online module on “Understanding Traumatic Stress and Substance Abuse Among Adolescents,” a webinar and lecture presentation featuring expert faculty from the NCTSN, and a four-part Train-the-Trainer video series entitled “Trauma and Co-Occurring Disorders: Understanding and Working with Youth and Their Caregivers.”

The ABA Center on Children and the Law, in collaboration with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, is pleased to announce the release of "TRAUMA: What Child Welfare Attorneys Should Know." This resource provides practical information about trauma-informed legal advocacy by attorneys representing children, parents, and child welfare agencies.

In furtherance of the American Bar Association's policy on trauma-informed legal practice, this resource can strengthen advocacy, improve attorney-client relationships, and promote appropriate screening, in-depth assessment, and evidence-based treatment. In addition, awareness of secondary traumatic stress can improve prevention, identification, and self-care among legal professionals.

The resource was developed by the NCTSN Justice Consortium Attorney Work Group, co-chaired by Christopher Branson, Ph.D., Carly Baetz, JD, Ph.D., and Eva Klain, JD (ABA Center on Children and the Law).
