The Well-Being of LGBTQ+ Youth in Foster Care: The Youth Acceptance Project

This presentation will first dive into sexual orientations and gender identities outside the binary to ensure that participants understand the many identities LGBTQ+ youth embody, as well as their unique needs. LGBTQ+ children and youth are among the most vulnerable, overrepresented populations in foster care.

Family Builders has developed the Youth Acceptance Project as an intervention for working with LGBTQ+ children and their families. The intervention serves as a family preservation and family reunification tool, assisting families who are struggling with the sexual orientation, gender identity or expression of their child.

Presentation Objectives:

  • Participants will learn how sexual orientation and gender identity live outside the binary.
  • Participants will understand how LGBTQ+ youth are additionally impacted in the child welfare system.
  • Participants will understand how the Youth Acceptance Project supports both LGBTQ+ children and their families.
